Gamification has become increasingly popular across various domains, including language learning applications. In recent years, developers of such apps have incorporated game elements and modern instructional methods to enhance user engagement, interactivity, and learning outcomes. Within this context, the user interface (UI) serves as the primary medium for user interaction and plays a critical role in delivering gamified experiences. This study aims to examine how visual elements within the UI contribute to the representation of gamification components in the Duolingo app. Employing a qualitative, descriptive-analytical approach, data were collected through library research, online resources, and direct observation. The analytical framework is based on Werbach’s pyramid model of gamification, which includes dynamics, mechanics, and game elements.
Findings suggest that the use of simple, cohesive visual design, featuring flat illustrations, basic geometric shapes, a vibrant color palette, and a balanced application of animation and sound, effectively simplifies and communicates complex gamified systems in an engaging and user-friendly manner. These visual strategies not only foster user motivation and concentration but also promote a sense of autonomy, relatedness, and value in the learning process. However, excessive use of animated or audio elements may lead to distraction and hinder cognitive focus.
It is therefore recommended that designers consider users’ cognitive limitations and integrate user-centered research and usability testing throughout the design process. Striking a balance between visual appeal and educational effectiveness is essential for optimizing both user experience and learning outcomes in gamified educational applications.
Nowadays, gamification and its application across various domains have gained significant popularity. In recent years, developers of language learning applications have turned to the use of game elements and modern educational methods, which enhance dynamism, engagement, entertainment, and better learning outcomes. On the other hand, the user interface is the most critical aspect of designing gamified applications and serves as the primary platform for user interactions. The main question of this research is: What role does the graphical user interface play in displaying the gamification components of the Duolingo app? The aim of this study is to explore how visual elements of the user interface are selected in a gamified educational system focused on language learning. This research is qualitative in nature, employing a descriptive-analytical approach, and the data collection methods include library research, internet resources, and observation. In this study, Werbach's framework for gamification is used, which consists of a pyramid with three parts: dynamics (elements that drive engagement), mechanics (decisions and rules), and game elements (challenges, points, achievements, levels, etc.). The results of the study indicate that the use of simple, cohesive visual elements, basic geometric shapes and forms, flat design, cheerful color palettes, and so on, can effectively present a complex gamification system in a simple, user-friendly, interactive, and enjoyable manner to the audience. These visual elements can also highlight the key features of a gamified user experience, which include increased motivation, a sense of autonomy, and enhanced user engagement, fostering feelings of self-efficacy, connection with the system, importance, value, and ease of use for the user.
