Today, industrial design not only responds to the users` needs, but also reflects their lifestyle and narrates the culture of its time. Over the past two decades, industrial design has moved from mere product design to a form of activist in society, and the emergence and growth of trends such as design management and socio-cultural approaches are the result of this global industrial design trend. Similarly, following the growth of postcolonial studies in art and design, research in the design of peripheral countries has found a special place in academic studies of design.
On the other hand, The globalized communications has made it possible to transform indigenous design into global design. Conversely, Global Design has made it possible to penetrate more and more easily around the world. In this context, the confrontation or interaction of two types of National design and Global design is possible.
Therefore, considering the theoretical foundations of globalization, there is a kind of dialectical relationship in the form of global design as a universal matter and national or local design as a particular matter.
Research Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate Identity frameworks and approaches on the side of design activists (designers, historians and theorists) in both of leading and prepherial countries in confront of global design.
Research Method: In this article, the research method is interpretive has been done by documentary analysis and qulitative methodology, based on open coding method. Research papers have been selected from articles published in the last 15 years in prestigious international journals including: “Design History”, “Design and Culture”, “Design Issues” and finally “Design” in the last 15 years. The selected articles are selected based on their purpose for the national design and are from three different continents of Europe, Asia and Ocean. Firstly, by studying the library resources, the basic principles and the necessary guidelines of Global Design (or International Design) have been extracted, and then, literature on the subject of "national design" or "national identity in design" have been investigated based on those universal characteristics.
Conclusion: The present study has identified four meta trends in how national design activists deal with Global Design: complete accompaniment, creative, multiple and eclectic encounter. All of them are clustered in the paradigm of Global-Localization. On the other hand, The hypothetical trend of pure localism is not observed due to the complete rejection of Global Design principles. The reason is the technological superiority of the production method based on mass-production and its undeniable advantages in contemporary world. Most of the national design differentiations are from the international flow by referring to the socio-cultural context and by using local symbols, established historical forms and local cultural values with priority in the category of product aesthetics.
