Carl Gustav Jung, the Swiss psychologist, is one of the most prominent theorists in the field of analytical psychology who has presented numerous theories about archetypes. Jung believes that in analyzing the human psyche, one can find symbolic and mythological elements present in the collective unconscious and inherited from previous generations. One of the most important archetypes is the Mother Archetype, which refers to symbols of fertility, nurturing, and creativity. According to Jung, the reflection of the Mother Archetype in human works is not limited to her real and physical aspects but also encompasses all universal and even supernatural aspects of the mother's personality and character. He considers the feminine elements in nature symbols that align with the emotional and psychological actions of the mother. Jung identifies various symbols for this archetype, including natural elements representing fertility, abundance, and sanctity. He categorizes all prominent maternal traits, such as nurturing, loyalty, support, power, and creativity, under this archetype. This research investigates the reflection of the Mother Archetype in the paintings of Mansour Ghandriz, a modern Iranian artist. Ghandriz is one of the founders of the Saqqakhaneh painting movement, which combines modern art with traditional and religious Iranian elements. His works, utilizing Iranian symbols and myths alongside modern techniques, achieve a novel interpretation of Iranian art. His paintings often include abstract forms, ancient symbols, and cultural elements of Iran, uniquely reflecting national and cultural identity. The aim of this research is to analyze the usage and function of the Mother Archetype in Mansour Ghandriz's paintings based on Jung's theories and to examine the ways this archetype manifests and the meanings and themes it conveys in his works. The research questions are: 1. What are the symbols related to the Mother Archetype in Mansour Ghandriz's paintings? 2. What meanings and themes does the reflection of the Mother Archetype in Mansour Ghandriz's paintings entail? The research method is qualitative and descriptive-analytical, conducted based on Carl Gustav Jung's theories. The necessary information was gathered through the study of library and documentary sources. These sources include books, scientific articles, and art analyses relevant to the research topic. The data collection tools include note-taking and all modern scanning tools. The research population includes all of Mansour Ghandriz's artistic works in which the symbols and references to the Mother Archetype can be identified and analyzed. Four artworks were purposefully selected from this population. The selection criteria include the presence of symbols and archetypal references related to the mother in these works. Content analysis was used to analyze the artworks; symbols and archetypal references in each artwork were identified, categorized, and analyzed. Finally, the analysis results, along with interpretations based on Jung's theories, were presented. The analyses showed that Ghandriz used numerous symbols in his works, such as water, flowing hair, a child in arms, jewelry like necklaces and anklets, and symbols like snakes, apples, and crescents to express complex psychological and mythological concepts. These symbols frequently appear in Ghandriz's works, each portraying aspects of deep psychological and mythological concepts. Ghandriz used these symbols to convey themes such as motherhood, nurturing, creativity, and even the negative aspects of the Mother Archetype. The research results indicate that Ghandriz successfully created works that evoke ethereal and immaterial states by employing creative artistic compositions and specific colors. These features have given his works a symbolic and mythological dimension, guiding the viewer to the depths of hidden and unconscious meanings. Cultural and historical influences are also clearly evident in Ghandriz's works. His attention to Iranian myths and local legends demonstrates his deep connection to Iran's cultural heritage. Changes in his style and techniques throughout his artistic career show the evolution of his perspectives and deeper exploration of mythological and symbolic concepts. These features have led to the creation of visually appealing and meaningful works. Overall, this research emphasizes the importance of studying Jungian archetypes in analyzing artistic works. The findings from this study can help readers and researchers approach the analysis and interpretation of artworks with new and broader perspectives. Additionally, this research can aid in better understanding the cultural and psychological influences of archetypes in contemporary Iranian art and illuminate the deeper connection between Jung's theories and modern Iranian art.
